Rock Pegasus 650

If you’re looking for a true desktop replacement, you’ll no doubt want a laptop with a decent-sized display. The Rock Pegasus 650 easily fulfils this criteria thanks to its good quality 15.4in widescreen LCD which boasts an impressive native resolution of 1680x1050. As such, you get far more on-screen space than most desktop PC’s can offer. On the downside, it’s a standard display rather than a glossy offering, so it doesn’t look as good as the likes of the ASUS.

Despite its more than ample display proportions, the Pegasus 650 is both slim and reasonably lightweight. For all this, it still boasts a reassuringly solid build quality. A particularly nice feature is the top of the laptop case, which is finished in glossy automotive paint (in a choice of colours). This helps the laptop feel like the bonnet of a sports car, rather than a heavy Tupperware lunchbox, and should prove the envy of your fellow commuters.

The Pegasus 650 was a good performer in our benchmark tests and seriously outperformed the competition in the 3D Mark 05 tests making this the ideal choice for gamers. The price you pay for performance is reduced battery life – the Rock notebook came out among the worst in our battery life tests. If power is an issue, you can switch off the functions of the Mobility Radeon X700 GPU via a hardware switch on the front of the notebook putting graphics back into the hands of the PC’s Intel chipset. Performance will suffer in graphics-intensive applications, but you’ll extend the battery life considerably.
