What Laptop Magazine (March '03)

ROCKDIRECT XENO-M 2.4GHz
A light and slim laptop with performance to spare

We first looked at the Rockdirect Xeno in the November 2002 issue, when the chassis was the latest addition to the company’s range, and we were impressed with its build quality and overall performance. While nothing has changed in terms of the actual build of this laptop, it is one of the first machines to host Intel’s latest and fastest chip, the Pentium 4-m 2.4GHz processor.

With a core voltage of 1.3 volts that drops to 1.2 volts when running on battery power, the Pentium 4-m
can be used in laptops over 30mm in depth. As with all Pentium 4-m processors, performance is enhanced by the use of a 400MHz front side bus speed. Under test, the Xeno-m scored a respectable 291.7 - one of the highest processor speeds to have been registered in WL. One downside of higher speeds is the amount of heat such processors generate. While there was a degree of heat build-up on the left-hand side of the chassis, this was not as great as we had expected.

The inclusion of Wireless LAN is a useful addition for those who have Wi-Fi access points in their office. The rear of the chassis is taken up by a modem port and battery pack, which lasted for 96 minutes under test, therefore expansion options are located on the sides of the machine. On the right-hand side there is a combination DVD/CD-RW drive that fits into a swappable bay, which can be replaced by a second battery (£116 inc. VAT) for greater usability when working on the move. Connectivity is provided by two USB ports, an external VGA port and a PS/2 port, while on the left side, users will find a further USB port, mini-FireWire, S-video and an Ethernet adapter.

The rockdirect Xeno-m 2.4GHz is a fast and user-friendly laptop that more than meets the needs of those who require performance and a good degree of portability from their laptop.
