Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Rock Sigma Si notebook computer with Windows 98. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact Mobile Support Customer Services.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

If you have any queries regarding any part of this installation, please do not hesitate to contact the Mobile support technical support departmentp

Please have the following disks and CD's to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

Complete Reinstall

WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk. Please follow Fdisk instructions if your hard drive has Windows installed on it before proceeding further.

How To Use The F-disk

F-disk is a dos based program that allows you remove any partitions from the hard drive and format the drive before installing any operating system.

Enter the F-Disk Program by Clicking Start and then Shutdown and Restart in MS-Dos mode or booting from a windows98 boot disk.
At "C:\Windows>" Type "CD.." and Press Enter.
Type "Fdisk" at C:\>
Enter the fdisk by pressing [Y]
Display Partition Information by pressing [4] and note the partitions present
Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive
You need to remove non DOS Partitions and Primary DOS Partition by selecting [4] Select delete non-DOS Partition and Press Enter
Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive again
Select [1] delete Primary DOS partition and Press Enter
Select what Primary Partition you want to delete, It should be preset to [1] and Press Enter
Enter the volume this should be non, unless specified across the top and Press Enter
You will be conformed with a message "Are you sure", Press [Y] for Yes and Enter
After removing Partition[s] press ESC to go back to the main screen.
Check to see if all partitions are removed by selecting [4] View Partition Information there should no Partitions defined and press Esc and reboot the machine.

1) Switch The Sigma On and, when prompted, press CTRL ALT S to enter setup
2) Select Start-up and then select Boot Device. Enable 1st boot CD-ROM Drive 2nd boot Diskette A and 3rd boot Hard Disk C.
3) Select OK, and then Exit then Save Changes and Exit, and OK to confirm
4) Insert Windows 98 CD and choose "Boot from CD" when prompted
5) Choose "Start Computer with CDROM Support"
6) When A:> Prompt appears, insert drivers CD label multimedia notebook PC, and type:
"D:\S2D\0vmakfil -F64 or F128 depending on the ram in the machine
7) Reinsert Window 98 CDROM and reboot
8) Select "Boot from CDROM", then "Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM"
9) Press enter to continue with set-up
10) Press enter to "Configure unallocated Space"
11) Highlight "Yes to Large Disk Support" by using the arrow keys, and then Return to reboot the machine
12) Select "Boot from CDROM" and then "Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM"
13) Wait while set-up is formatting your hard disk, this may take a few minutes
14) Press Enter to continue
15) Choose Continue, Next, 'Portable' and then Next
16) We recommend that you choose "Show Me a List of Components" and then select everything - but for an easier installation you may select the "Recommended" option.
17) Enter a Computer name and Workgroup if needed (ask your network administrator) and click next
18) Select "United Kingdom", then Next and then Next again.
19) Wait while Windows Setup copies files
20) The computer will then reboot wait for the computer to restart
21) Select "Boot from Hard Disk"
22) When prompted enter Name and Company information
23) Read the license agreement and, if you accept, click on "I accept the agreement"
24) Click Next and then carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity.
25) Then select Finish
26) At the "PC card Wizard" click Next, Next and then Finish
27) After hardware detection the computer will reboot again
28) Select "Boot from Hard Disk" again
29) Please wait for the hardware set-up to complete
30) Set Date, Time and Time zone and then click Apply and then OK
31) The computer will copy files and then reboot
32) Select "Boot from Hard disk" again
33) Enter a password if you wish - although this is not necessary
34) Please wait while Windows installs new hardware and continues starting up.
35) Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 98.
36) As windows reboots it will find new hardware and drivers will need to be installed please see instructions below to install drivers.

Installation of Video drivers on Sigma Si for Windows 98

1) Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
2) Right click on Mt Computer and select properties
3) Select Device manger and click the + next to Display adapters
4) Double click the display driver and select the driver tab from the top
5) Double click the update driver tab in the bottom right hand corner and click next
6) Search for better drivers as recommended, place a tick in CDROM and Specify location, type D:\VIDEO\WIN9X\WIN9X and click next
7) Click next, next and finish to install driver for the video card
8) Restart the machine as recommended
9) After restarting, go back to Control Panel and double-click on Display
10) Click on the Settings tab
11) Change the Screen area to 1024x768 and the Colours to High Colour (16 bit) - or higher if you wish
12) Click Apply, choose "Apply the new colour settings without restarting" and then OK
13) Select OK and then, once the screen has resized, choose Yes
14) Finally choose OK to exit from Display properties (you can now close the Control Panel)

Installation of Sound Drivers on Sigma Si for Windows 98

1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
2. Right click on Mt Computer and select properties
3. Select Device manger and double click the PCI Multimedia Audio Device listing under Other Devices
4. Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
5. Search for better drivers as recommended, place a tick in CDROM and Specify location, type D:\Audio\ win95_98 and click next and click the "enable this device" tab

The Sound drivers are now installed - to test reboot the computer and you should hear a jingle as Windows restarts

Installation of the Ethernet card on Sigma Si for Windows 98

1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
2. Right click on My Computer and select properties
3. Select Device manger and double click the PCI Ethernet Controller, this device is listing under Other Devices
4. Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
5. Search for better drivers as recommended, place a tick in CDROM and Specify location, type D:\Lan\Win98 and click next and click finish. Restart the machine as requested.

Installation of the PCI card (modem) on Sigma Si for Windows 98

1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
2. Right click on My Computer and select properties
3. Select Device manger and double click the PCI Card, this device is listing under Other Devices
4. Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
5. Search for better drivers as recommended, place a tick in CDROM and Specify location, type D:\MDC\win9x and click next and click finish. Restart the machine for the drivers to take effect.

Installation of the DVD software on the Sigma Si for Windows 98

1. Insert the Win DVD 200 CD into the drive
2. Wait for the Auto run
3. Click the Install InterVideo WinDVD 2000 tab
4. Click the install now tab and wait for the set-up to start
5. Click the next tab, agree with the licence agreement and click yes
6. Type the name of the computer usually Sigma SI and the serial number from the envelope for the CD and click next.
7. Click the next tab, select the typical installation, click next and wait for the files to be copied and click finish.
8. Install the direct x version 7 from the CD when prompted then click ok to restart the machine.

Setting Up PCMCIA cards in Windows 98 on Sigma Si

NOTES:

Knowledge of networks is required to set-up network cards. If you have any question with regard to protocols, workgroups or user names please contact you network administrator.

The cards listed below are the Rock approved cards for the Sigma Si. While there should be no problems with any other standard PCMCIA card on this computer, the three cards listed below are the only ones supported either here or by Mobile Support.

Setting up a Xircom 10/100 Ethernet Card in Windows 98 On Sigma Si

Switch on the notebook.
Once Windows 98 has loaded, put the Xircom PCMCIA card into any of the PCMCIA slots
Windows will say it has found a Xircom PCMCIA card
Windows 98 will then automatically set-up the drivers

Setting up a Dlink Ethernet Card in Windows 98 On Sigma Si

Switch on the notebook.
Once Windows 98 has loaded, put in the Dlink card
Windows will say it has found a PCMCIA card
Windows 98 will then automatically set-up the drivers
