Introduction
This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Rock Sigma notebook computer with Windows 98. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact mobile-support.net Customer Services.
Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.
Complete Reinstall
WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED
These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk.
- Switch The Sigma On and, when prompted, press F2 to enter setup
- Select Main->Boot Sequence and select "CDROM then C:"
- Select OK, Exit then Save Changes and Exit and OK
- Insert Windows 98 CD and choose "Boot from CD" when prompted
- Choose "Start Computer with CDROM Support"
- When A:> Prompt appears, insert drivers CD and type:
"D:\S2D\0vmakfil �P296"
- Reinsert Window 98 CDROM and reboot
- Choose "Boot from CDROM", then "Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM"
- Choose Continue and then "Configure unallocated Space"
- Select "Yes to Large Disk Support" and then Return to reboot
- Choose "Boot from CDROM" and then "Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM"
- Wait while drive is formatted
- Press Enter to continue
- Choose Continue, Next, �Portable� then Next
- We recommend that you choose "Show Me a List of Components" and then select everything � but for an easier installation you may select the "Recommended" option.
- Enter a Computer name and Workgroup if needed (ask your network administrator) and click next
- Select "United Kingdom", then Next and then Next again.
- Wait while Windows Setup copies files
- The computer will then reboot
- Choose "Boot from Hard Disk"
- When prompted enter Name and Company information
- Read the license agreement and, if you accept, click on "I accept the agreement"
- Click Next and then carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity.
- Then select Finish
- At the "PC card Wizard" click Next, Next and then Finish
- After a short wait the computer will reboot again
- Select "Boot from Hard Disk" again
- Set Date, Time and Time zone and then click Apply and then OK
- The computer will work for a few minutes and then reboot
- Select "Boot from Hard disk" again
- Enter a password if you wish � although this is not necessary
- Please wait while Windows installs new hardware and continues starting up.
- Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 98. All that is left is to install the video and sound drivers � instructions are included overleaf.
Installation of Video drivers on Sigma under Windows 98
- Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer, the CD should auto-run
- Click on the display symbol and the drivers will be installed
- After restarting, go back to Control Panel and double-click on Display
- Click on the Settings tab
- Change the Screen area to 1024x768 and the Colours to High Colour (16 bit) � or higher if you wish
- Click Apply, choose "Apply the new colour settings without restarting" and then OK
- Select OK and then, once the screen has resized, choose Yes
- Finally choose OK to exit from Display properties (you can now close the Control Panel)
Installation of Sound Drivers on Sigma Under Windows 98
- Insert the Drivers CD supplied with the computer, it should auto-run
- Click on the Sound icon � this will install your drivers.
The Sound drivers are now installed � to test reboot the computer and you should hear a jingle as Windows restarts
Setting Up PCMCIA cards in Windows 98 on Sigma
NOTES:
Knowledge of networks is required to set-up network cards. If you have any question with regard to protocols, workgroups or user names please contact you network administrator.
The cards listed below are the Rock approved cards for the Sigma. While there should be no problems with any other standard PCMCIA card on this computer, the three cards listed below are the only ones supported either here or by Rock Technical Support.
Setting up a Xircom 10/100 Ethernet Card in Windows 98 On Sigma
Switch on the notebook.
Once Windows 98 has loaded, put the Xircom PCMCIA card into any of the PCMCIA slots
Windows will say it has found a Xircom PCMCIA card
Windows 98 will then automatically set-up the drivers
Setting up a Dlink Ethernet Card in Windows 98 On Sigma
Switch on the notebook.
Once Windows 98 has loaded, put in the Dlink card
Windows will say it has found a PCMCIA card
Windows 98 will then automatically set-up the drivers
Setting up a Pace NB56 Voice Modem under Windows 98 On a Sigma
Switch on the notebook.
