Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Rock Pegasus XS notebook computer with Windows 98. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact Mobile Support.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

If you have any queries regarding any part of this installation, please do not hesitate to contact the Mobile support technical Support Department

Please have the following disks and CD�s to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

If there is an Operating System on your hard drive already installed, please follow the Fdisk Document Enclosed.

How To Use The F-disk Windows 2000 on your Pegasus XS

F-disk is a dos based program that allows you remove any partitions from the hard drive and format the drive before installing any operating system.


1) Enter the F-Disk Program by booting from a Windows 98 boot disk
2) Choose boot without CDROM support and wait for the system to load.
3) Type �Fdisk� at A:\>
4) Enter the fdisk by pressing enter to [Y]
5) Display Partition Information by pressing [4] and note the partitions present
6) Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive
7) You need to remove non DOS Partitions by selecting [4] Select delete non-DOS Partition and press enter to continue.
8)You will be conformed with a message �Are you sure�, Press [Y] for Yes and Enter
9) After removing Partition[s] press ESC to go back to the main screen.
10) Check to see if all partitions are removed by selecting [4] View Partition Information there should no Partitions defined and press Esc and reboot the machine.

Complete Reinstall

WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk. Please follow the FDisk instructions enclosed if the hard disk has an operating system already installed on it.

1) Switch The Pegasus XS On and when prompted,
2) Press F2 to enter bios set-up
3) Select Main->Boot sequence and change so that CDROM is first, Diskette second and Hard Drive third.
4) Click OK and select Exit. Once selected exit press enter and save changes and exit click ok to confirm settings
5) Insert Windows 2000 CD into the CDROM drive and restart the machine. �Boot from CDROM� when prompted
6) Set-up windows 2000 will detect hardware and install files this process takes several minutes.
7) Welcome to set-up message will appear, Press enter to continue with set-up of Windows 2000.
8) Read the license agreement and, press F8 to a� Accept the agreement�
9) Press Enter to install using unpartitioned space
10) Format the hard drive to configure the unpartitioned disk space by pressing enter
11) Format the partiton using the NTFS file system, which should be highlighted as default
12) Please wait while set-up formats the partition
13) Please wait whilst set-up copies files it may take several minutes
14) Wait for the machine to restart and load into windows
15) Click next to continue set-up. Windows will detect devices on your computer and the screen may flicker a few times, which is normal.
16) Regional settings message will appear and select customise and select English (UNITED KINGDOM) and click apply and ok keyboard select English (UNITED KINGDOM) and click ok and next
17) Type in name and organisation if relevant
18) Carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity.
19) Click next on next screen and enter a administrator password (please ask your company administrator)
20) Change the date and time and click next to continue
21) Wait for network setting to install software and components and wait for final set of tasks, this may take a few moments and click finish after the installation is complete
22) Choose whether to use typical or custom settings, we recommend Custom setting, if unsure pick typical settings as recommended by windows and click next
23) Do you want this computer to be apart of a domain, select no this computer is not on a network and click next to continue and wait for files to be copied
24) Restart machine after removing the CD in the CDROM drive
25) Confirm the password and user name.
26) Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 2000. Please follow instruction included overleaf.

Installation of Windows 2000 Video drivers on Pegasus XS for Windows 2000

Windows 2000 would load standard video drivers during the installation you may not need to install any drivers for video display unless required for an external device.

Installation of Sound Drivers on Pegasus XS Under Windows 2000

1) Windows2000 sound driver would be found on the notebook driver supplied with the machine.
2) Right click on my computer and select properties and hardware devices and then device manager
3) Double click multimedia audio controller listed under other devices
4) Click on reinstall driver and click next
5) Get the wizard to search for the drivers as recommended by windows, so click next
6) Uncheck floppy disk and check the specify location box and the CDROM drive boxes with a tick and click next
7) Type D:\Win2000\audio and click ok tab at the top of the window
8) The wizard will search for drivers please wait and when complete and found new drivers click next, wait for drivers to be copied.
9) Click finish to complete the installation

Installation of Modem on Pegasus XS Under Windows 2000

1) Right click My Computer and select properties and then device manager from windows
2) Double click PCI device
3) Click on reinstall driver
4) Click the next tab and next again to search for drivers as recommended by windows
5) Uncheck the floppy disk box and check the specify location box, then click next to continue
6) Copy manufactures files from D:\win2000\modem and click the ok tab, you may need to type the location as specified on previous line
7) Wait for file to be copied over and click the next tab when the files are found and click yes to continue with the installation.
8) Click finish to end

Installation of a unknown device (MTC Quick Start Button)

1) Right click my computer and select properties and then device manager
2) Double click unknown device in unknown devices and install driver by clicking reinstall driver
3) Uncheck specify location and leave cdrom checked, so will detect the driver by itself.
4) Windows would detect the device and install the driver
5) The unknown device is the MTC Quick start button �See User Manual�
6) Once drivers are loaded click finish to end the installation for drivers and restart the machine for the drivers to take effect.

Installation of the realtec RTL81399(a) network for a Pegasus XS using Windows 2000

Right click My Computer and select Properties
Select hardware and then device manager
Double click network adapters and then double click Realtek RTL8139 A
Click driver tab and select update driver. Click next and then search for better as recommended
Click next when ready and place a tick in CDROM Drive and Specify Location
Click Browse and look in [D] drive and double click on Win2000 folder, double click Lan folder and click open and then OK
Click next when the machine finds a new driver and wait for the files to be copied and Click Finish.

Power management set-up on the Rock Pegasus XS using Windows2000

Windows 2000 doesn�t require a save to disk partition as it supports save to disk. You will see an red warning error message appearing when booting during the process of installing windows, this is normal and is nothing to worry about.

Although follow the steps below to enable Hibernate support on Windows 2000.

1) Restart the machine and enter the bios by Pressing F2 again.
2) Go to Advanced and click on �save to disk warning message � so the tick disappears
3) Then save changes and exit again.
4) This should disable the message appearing when first switched on.
5) When the machine reboots click the start tab in windows and select settings and then control panel
6) Go to Power options and then Hibernate, place a tick in Enable Hibernate Support and apply these settings.
