Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Rock Pegasus XS notebook computer with Windows 98. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact Mobile Support.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

Please have the following disks and CD�s to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

If there is an Operating System on your hard drive already installed, please follow the Fdisk Document Enclosed.

How To Use The F-disk program on your Pegasus XS using Windows 98

F-disk is a dos based program that allows you remove any partitions from the hard drive and format the drive before installing any operating system.

Boot from a boot disk by inserting a boot disk and switching your machine on. Instructions on how to create a boot disk are on the next page under creating a save to disk partition

1) At �C:\Windows>� Type �CD..� and Press Enter.
2) Type �Fdisk� at C:\>
3) Enter the fdisk by pressing [Y]
4) Display Partition Information by pressing [4] and note the partitions present
5) Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive
6) You need to remove non DOS Partitions and Primary DOS Partition by selecting [4] Select delete non-DOS Partition and Press Enter
7) Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive again
8) Select [1] delete Primary DOS partition and Press Enter
9) Select what Primary Partition you want to delete, It should be preset to [1] and Press Enter
10) Enter the volume this should be non, unless specified across the top and Press Enter
11) You will be conformed with a message �Are you sure�, Press [Y] for Yes and Enter
12) After removing Partition[s] press ESC to go back to the main screen.
13) Check to see if all partitions are removed by selecting [4] View Partition Information there should no Partitions defined and press Esc and reboot the machine.


Creating a Save To Disk Partition On Your Pegasus XS For Windows98

A save to disk partition is used by your machine where the data is stored if you use the suspend feature on your machine or if battery power is low.

If you wish to install a save to disk partition please follow the steps below before proceeding further.

Follow the instructions:

  1. Create a Win98 Boot from your own machine. If you can boot up into Windows 98.
  2. This is done by inserting a floppy disk into drive and click on the start tab in windows and then settings then control panel then add/remove software.
  3. Once in add/remove software click on the start-up disk and then create disk. Click ok to continue with the set-up after labelling the disk �Start up disk�, wait the files to be copied.
  4. Insert the notebook driver CD into CDROM, wait for the CD to auto run, if the CD doesn�t auto run double click my computer and double click [D] drive.
  5. Once [D] drive opens double click on the utlity folder and send the � 0vmakfil � file to floppy drive [A] with the boot disk you created in the drive. Wait for the files to be copied.
  6. Insert the boot disk created into the [A] drive before the machine is switched on and restart the machine so the machine boots from the boot disk.
  7. At the [A] prompt type in � 0vmakfil �, wait for s2d software to install, after installation reboot machine.
  8. Your save to disk partition is set-up and you mat proceed with the installation of Windows 98 below.

Complete Reinstall

WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk. If there is an Operating System on your hard drive already please follow the Fdisk Document Enclosed.

1) Switch The Pegasus XS On and, when prompted, press F2 to enter setup
2) Select Main->Boot Sequence and change so that CDROM is first, Diskette second and Hard Drive third.
3) Click OK and then Exit and then Click save changes and exit followed ok to confirm.
4) Insert the Windows98 Second Edition CD into the CDROM drive and wait for the machine to reboot.
5) Choose �Boot from CD� when prompted
6) Choose �Start Computer with CDROM Support�
7) When A:> Prompt appears, insert drivers CD and type: �D:\utility\phdisk /create 170000 /partition�
8) Reinsert Window 98 CDROM and reboot
9) Choose �Boot from CDROM�, then �Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM�
10) Press enter to Continue and then �Configure unallocated Space�
11) Select �Yes to Large Disk Support� and then Return to reboot
12) Choose �Boot from CDROM� and then �Start Windows 98 setup from CDROM�
13) Wait while drive is formatted
14) Press Enter to continue
15) Choose Continue, Next, �Portable� then Next
16) We recommend that you choose �Show Me a List of Components� and then select everything � but for an easier installation you may select the �Recommended� option� if unsure of what to install.
17) Click continue to begin set-up
18) Click next to copy files to �C:windows�
19) We recommend a typical installation if unsure what to install, so please click next
20) Install the most common components as recommended
21) Enter a Computer name and Workgroup if needed (ask your network administrator) and click next
22) Select �United Kingdom�, then Next and then Next again.
23) Wait while Windows Setup copies files
24) The computer will then reboot
25) Choose �Boot from Hard Disk�
26) When prompted enter Name and Company information
27) Read the license agreement and, if you accept, click on �I accept the agreement�
28) Click next and then carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity.
29) Then select Finish
30) At the �PC card Wizard� click Next, Next and then Finish
31) Windows will detect all plug and play devices on your machine.
32) After a short time the computer will reboot again
33) Select �Boot from Hard Disk� again
34) Set Date, Time and Time zone and then click Apply and then OK
35) The computer will work for a few minutes and then reboot
36) Select �Boot from Hard disk� again
37) Enter a password if you wish � although this is not necessary
38) Please wait while Windows installs new hardware and continues starting up.
39) Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 98. All that is left is to install the video and sound drivers � instructions are included overleaf.

Installation of Video drivers on Pegasus XS under Windows 98

1) Right click on My Computer and select properties and then device manager
2) All device which need drivers installing are found in other devices
3) Double click display adapter and then double click standard PCI Graphics adapter VGA
4) Click driver tab and then update driver, click the next tab
5) Search for better drivers recommended
6) Place a tick in cd-rom and specify location. Change the location to d: and click browse
7) Double click cd-rom drive and double click win98 folder, double click VGA folder and click OK
8) Now on the new screen click next
9) When windows is ready to install drivers for the device click next and wait for files to be copied
10) Click the finish tab and click yes to restart the machine

Installation of Sound Drivers on Pegasus XS Under Windows 98

1) Ensure Drivers CD is inserted
2) Right click My computer and select properties then device manager
3) Double click PCI Multimedia Audio Device, listed in other devices
4) Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
5) Search for better drivers as recommended so click the next tab
6) Place a tick in CDROM and specify location
7) The location should be �d:win98\Audio� and click next
8) Click next to update driver and next again
9) Message insert win98 cd and click OK should appear, so insert the windows98 CD and click OK
10) If you get an error message unable to install driver for this device try again, then enable the device by clicking enable device
11) Restart the machine

The Sound drivers are now installed � to test reboot the computer and you should hear a jingle as Windows restarts

Installation of Modem on Pegasus XS Under Windows 98

1) Ensure the Drivers CD is inserted
2) Click Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click System
3) Click Device Manager and select the entry labelled: PCI Card
4) Double click PCI Card and click reinstall drivers
5) Click next and next again
6) Place a tick in CDROM and specify location and type �D:win98\modem� in the space provided then click next and next again
7) You should get message insert disk labelled PCTWAVE.CAT, click the skip file tab
8) Once file are copied click finish
9) Click OK, Next, Next and then Finish � you have now installed your modem.

Installation of the internal network card using windows98 on Pegasus XS

1) Ensure the Drivers CD is inserted
2) Click Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click System
3) Click Device Manager and select the entry labelled:
4) PCI Ethernet Controller
5) Click the reinstall driver tab and click next and next again
6) Select search for better drivers and click next
7) Place a tick in CDROM and specify location type �D:Win98\Lan� in the space provided
8) Click the next tab and insert the windows98 CD into the drive specify the location as D:Win98 and click ok and then finish and yes to restart the machine.

Installation of the MITSUMI USB FDD on your Pegasus XS using Windows98

1) Ensure the Drivers CD is inserted
2) Click Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click System
3) Click Device Manager and select the entry labelled: MITSUMI USB FDD
4) Click reinstall driver tab and click next and next
5) Place a tick in CDROM and specify location boxes. Click the browse button and select D:CDROM drive and win98 folder and then USB_Floppy
6) Click OK the Specified location should appear in the white box, then click the next tab
7) Wait for files to be searched and click next to continue and finish.

Installing the unknown device (QSB) Quick Start Button) driver on your Pegasus XS Using Windows98

1) Ensure the Drivers CD is inserted
2) Click Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click System
3) Click Device Manager and select the entry labelled: Unknown Device by double clicking on it
4) Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
5) Search for better drivers should be checked then click next again
6) Place a tick in CDROM and specify location Type �D:Win98\QSB� and click next to install drivers and then finish
7) Restart the computer for the drivers to take effect
