Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Rock Mentor 2 notebook computer with Windows NT4. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact mobile-support.net Customer Services.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

Complete Reinstall

WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

  1. Use a DOS start-up disk to start the Notebook Computer.
  2. Type �fdisk� at the A:\ prompt
  3. Select �Yes� to enable large disk support
  4. Use option 3 to delete all partitions on the disk (usually 1 Primary DOS and 1 Non-DOS)
  5. Esc to DOS and the Reboot with start-up disk in drive
  6. Insert disk containing ZVHDD program
  7. Type �zvhdd /c /partition /m:256�
  8. Once this has finished, remove all floppy disks, insert Windows NT4 CD-ROM and reboot
  9. When prompted press DEL to enter Setup
  10. Go to the BIOS Features Setup option
  11. Change the Boot Sequence to read "CDROM, C:, A:" � (When you have finished this setup you may wish to change this back)
  12. Press Esc, then F10 and Yes to save settings.
  13. Now NT will bring up the screen saying "Welcome to Steup"

14) Press the Enter key

15) NT will now say that setup has found the following device

"IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller"

16) Press the Enter key to continue

17) PLEASE READ LICENSING AGREEMENT

18) Press PAGE DOWN until you have read the whole agreement

19) Press F8 to agree

20) Now NT will display a screen showing the current settings.

21) DO NOT CHANGE any of the settings and press the Enter key

22) Select C: (New unformatted) and press the D key then press the L key

(If it says "C: (Unpartitioned Space)" please skip step 22)

23) Now press the C key, change the figure to 2000 and press the return key and then press it again when prompted

24) Now select "Format the partition using the NTFS file system" and press Enter

25) NT set-up will now start formatting the Hard Disk Drive

26) Once formatted, NT will ask for a directory to install NT on - Press the Enter key

27) Now NT would like to test the Hard Disk Drive

Press the ESC key

28) Now NT will start to copy NT Workstation files from the CD-ROM to the HDD

29) Once NT has copied the files it will ask to re-boot the computer

30) REMOVE ANY FLOPPY DISKS IN THE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE and the NT4 CD and press the Enter key

NT will now boot up and then start to do its checks

NT will now convert the File System to NTFS and re-boot

NT will boot up again and will ask for the NT4 CD

31) Insert the CD and click on OK

32) Now you will have a screen "Windows NT Setup"

Press the Next button

33) Under Set-up options select "Portable" and press the Next button

34) Now type in your Name, Organisation and press the Next button

35) Now type in you Registration Number. (This is found on the front of your manual)

Press the Next button

36) Now NT will ask you for a Computer Name

Type in a name and press the Next button

37) Now NT will ask for a password

DO NOT type anything, press the Next button

38) NT will now ask you if you wish to create an Emergency Repair Disk

Select the YES option and press the Next button

39) Now you will be in the Windows NT Components Windows

Press the Next button

40) Now NT will start to install files, select the Next button

41) Now NT will ask about Network installation

Select "Do not connect this computer to a network at this time" and

Press the Next button

42) Select the Finish button

43) Now NT will ask for a Time Zone.

Select your time zone and select Close

44) NT will now try and detect the display.

It will find a VGA compatible Display adapter

Select OK and then OK in display properties

(We will change the display settings later)

Windows NT will now start copying files and setting security strings

45) Now NT set-up will ask you for a blank Floppy Disk.

Put in the Floppy Disk in to Floppy Disk Drive and select OK

46) Once NT has finished it will ask to restart the computer

Take out the Floppy Disk out of Floppy Disk Drive and also remove the NT4 CD then

Select RESTART COMPUTER

47) Once restarted

Select "NT 4 Workstation v4.0" on booting up

48) When you are on the NT Logging on screen, press CRTL + ALT + DEL

The screen will now show "Administrator" and ask for a password

Press the OK button

49) Insert the Service Pack 4 CD, after the page has auto loaded click "Install Service Pack 4"

50) Then Click Open

51) Read the License agreement and then Click "Accept the License Agreement" and then click Install

52) After the installation remove the NT4 CD and click Restart.

53) Once restarted

Select "NT 4 Workstation v4.0" on booting up

54) When you are on the NT Logging on screen, press CRTL + ALT + DEL

The screen will now show "Administrator" and ask for a password

Press the OK button

55) At the window that says "Windows NT4 Services Pack Setup" Click No

 

 

 

Display Settings under Windows NT 4 Workstation

How to set-up the Video Driver under NT4

 

1) Put support CD (that came with the Mentor 2) in to CD-ROM

2) Go to Start, then Settings and then to Control Panel

3) Double Click Display

4) In the display properties window select the Settings Tab

5) Now select Display Type

6) Next to Adapter Type select Change

7) Now select Have Disk

8) In the path for the Driver type "D:\nmnt40" and click OK

9) It will ask about load 3rd Party drivers, select YES

10) Once it has copied the files select OK

11) Now select Close, and Close again (in display properties)

12) Now NT will ask to re-start select YES

13) Take out any floppy disks in floppy disk drive and CD from CD drive

14) Once restarted, NT will give a window "Invalid Display Settings"

15) Select OK

16) Now change the settings to

Colour Palette: 16777216

Desktop area to 1024x768

17) Now select TEST to confirm settings are OK

18) If settings are OK select YES

19) And then OK in Display Properties Window

Now a full screen should be displayed.

 

 

 

 

Audio for Windows NT4 Workstation

How to set-up the ESS Maestro audio driver under NT4

 

1) Once the Mentor 2 has re-booted and NT4 has completely loaded up

2) Inset the Support CD then select Start->Run and then type "command" and click OK, then type "MD C:\AUDIO" then press Return and then type

"COPY D:\essnt40 C:\AUDIO"

And press return again and then type "Exit" and press return.

3) Go to Start, Settings and then Control Panel

4) Double click on Multimedia

5) Now select the Devices Tab

6) Now select ADD

7) Now select "Unlisted or Updated Driver" and then OK

8) NT will now ask for the path, type in "C:\AUDIO" and Click OK

9) NT will now show the device so click OK

10) Then click Restart Now

Once restarted sound should be heard from the speakers. Don�t forget to put the volume up!

 

 

 

Setting up the Keyboard Properties and Regional Settings

 

1) Go to Start then to Settings and Control Panel

2) Select Keyboard by pointing to & double clicking the mouse button

3) Select Input Locales

4) Select Add and then move down the languages until you get to "ENGLISH (United Kingdom)"

5) Now select "ENGLISH (United Kingdom)" and click OK

6) Now highlight "ENGLISH (United States)" and select Remove

7) Select OK

(Windows NT will now load the files it requires from the CD)

8) Now select Regional (Shown in the Control Panel)

9) Select "ENGLISH (United Kingdom)"

10) Select OK and remove the CD

 

 

Setting up a Apex / Pace PCMCIA Modem card

Windows NT4 & Rock Mentor 2

Put in the PCMCIA modem card into the Mentor 2 PCMCIA Slot

Switch on the Mentor 2

Once the Mentor 2 has booted and NT4 has completely loaded up

The Modem card should automatically be recognised.

The Modem card should set itself to COM3, IRQ 5.

You can check this by going into Start, Settings, Control Panel and PC Card

Once in PC Card (PCMCIA) Devices

Select the modem card

Now select Properties and then Resources

Your settings will now be displayed.

Setting up the Modem Driver

Go to Start, then Settings and then into Control Panel

Now double click Modem

In the window "Install New Modem",

Select "let windows search for modem"

Select Next

Windows will now say it has found a modem on COM3

Select Change

 

Select Next

For country select "United Kingdom"

Type in your area code

Select Next

Select Finish

Select Close

 

Testing the PCMCIA modem

Go to Start, then Programs and then to Accessories and select Phone Dialer

Type in a number and then select Dial

You should get a ringing sound from the number you are calling

 

 

 

 

Setting up of a Dlink PCMCIA Ethernet card

Dlink DE660, Windows NT4 & Rock Mentor 2

NOTE :

Knowledge of networks is required to set-up NT networks. If you have any question with regard to protocols, workgroups or domains, please contact you network administrator.

Put in the Dlink PCMCIA Card into the Mentor 2 PCMCIA Slot

Switch on the Mentor 2

Once in Windows NT workstation

Login as Administrator

Go to Start then Settings and then Control Panel

Now double click the Network icon

Will ask "Windows NT Networking is not installed, do you want to install it now ?"

Select Yes

You will be in the "Network Setup Wizard"

Windows will be searching for networking bits

Now windows will ask, "Windows NT needs to know how this computer should participate on a network"

Select the option Wired to the network

Select Next

Windows will now request for a network adapter

Select Select from List

Select Have Disk

NT will now ask for the location of the driver file

Put in the Dlink Driver disk into the floppy disk drive and

type in "A\NT40"

Select OK

"D-Link DE-660 Ethernet PC Card" should be displayed

Select OK

Now you will be back to the "request for network adapter" window with "Dlink DE660 Ethernet Card" in the selection box

Select Next

Select Protocols if required

Select Next

Select Changes to Network Services

Select Next

Select Next

NT will now ask for the location to copy Windows NT4 files

Insert the Windows NT4 CD and type "D:\i386"

When NT asks for a path again type "A:\NT40"

Now a DLink setup screen will come up, select the following :

IO port: 340

IRQ: 9

Select Continue

If you have chosen TCP/IP protocol, NT will ask you about settings now

NT will now load the required files

Select Next

Select Next

NT will now ask you about Workgroup / Domain name

make selection and type in the name

Select Next

Select Finish

Select Yes to reboot machine

Take the Dlink Driver Disk out of the floppy disk drive

 

 

Setting up of a Xircom PCMCIA Ethernet card

Xircom CE3B-100BTX, Windows NT4 & Rock Mentor 2

NOTE:

Knowledge of networks is required to set-up NT networks. If you have any question with regard to protocols, workgroups or domains, please contact you network administrator.

Put in the Xircom PCMCIA Card into the Mentor 2 PCMCIA Slot

Switch on the Mentor 2

Once in Windows NT workstation

Login as Administrator

Go to Start then Settings and then Control Panel

Now double click the Network icon

Will ask "Windows NT Networking is not installed, do you want to install it now ?"

Select Yes

You will be in the "Network Setup Wizard"

Windows will be searching for networking bits

Now windows will ask, "Windows NT needs to know how this computer should participate on a network"

Select the option Wired to the network

Select Next

Windows will now request for a network adapter

Select Select from List

Select Have Disk

NT will now ask for the location of the driver file

Put in the Xircom Driver disk into the floppy disk drive and

type in "A\"

Select OK

"Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter 10/100" should be displayed

Select OK

Now you will be back to the "request for network adapter" window with "Xircom CreditCard Ethernet Adapter 10/100" in the selection box

Select Next

Select Protocols

Select Next

Select Changes to Network Services

Select Next

Select Next

NT will now ask for the location to copy Windows NT4 files

Insert Window NT4 CD and type "D:\i386"

When NT asks for a path again type "A:\"

Now a DLink setup screen will come up, select the following :

IO port : 340

IRQ : 7

Select Continue

NT will now load the required files

Select Next

Select Next

NT will now ask you about Workgroup / Domain name

Leave as Workgroup

Select Next

Select Finish

Select Yes to reboot machine

Take the Xircom Driver Disk out of the floppy disk drive
