Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user set up their notebook computer. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up contact Technical Services. The Technical Services numbers are on the back page of this booklet.

Setting up using floppy disks

If you are installing Windows 95 from floppy disk drive ignore the following sections:
Partitioning & Formatting the Hard Disk Drive
Setting up the CD-ROM Driver

Also where reference is made to CD-ROM or �D:� drive, change reference from �D:� drive to �A:�

SETTING UP THE HIBERNATION PARTITION

NOTE: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

1) Put in the disk labelled "PHDISK" in the Floppy Disk Drive
2) Switch on computer, the computer will boot from the Floppy Disk Drive
3) At the DOS Prompt ("A:\>") type in "PHDISK /CREATE" PHDISK will now create the 'Save to Disk' partition.
4) Once this is done Re-Boot your machine by pressing: CTRL+ALT+DELETE (all simultaneously)

Your 'Save to Disk / Hibernation mode' is now setup.


PARTITIONING & FORMATTING THE HARD DISK DRIVE

1) Put in your Windows 95 "DSP CD-ROM Setup Boot Disk"
2) Switch on computer (The computer will boot from the Floppy Disk Drive)
3) At the DOS Prompt ("A:\>") type in "FDISK" (The computer will now load the program FDISK)
4) Select �Yes� to enable large disk support
5) You will now be in the FDISK menu. Press Return THREE times. (The computer will write the partition information)
6) Press Esc to exit to the dos Prompt and restart the machine.
7) Leave the disk in the computer
8) At the DOS Prompt ("A:\>") type in "FORMAT C:/U/S" The following prompt will be displayed:

WARNING: ALL DATA ON-NON REMOVABLE DISK
DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST
PROCEED WITH FORMAT (Y/N)

Press the 'Y' key followed by the Enter key.
(The format process may take up to 35 minutes, this is normal)

After the format is complete a volume label and files are added to the root directory of the hard disk (these are vitally important and must remain on the disk unmodified)

9) Take out the floppy disk
10) Once this is done Re-Boot your machine by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE (all simultaneously)


INSTALLATION OF WINDOWS 95 OEM ON CD-ROM

1) Switch on the computer
2) Insert the Windows 95 OEM CD-ROM and boot disk
3) Type "D:" and press RETURN
4) Type "Setup" and press RETURN twice ( Setup will perform a quick scandisk of drive C:)
5) Click on CONTINUE or press return. ( Windows will now prepare the hard disk for installation) THE LICENSING AGREEMENT WILL BE DISPLAY PLEASE READ AND PRESS YES TO CONTINUE
6) Click on NEXT to continue.
7) Click on NEXT to install Windows 95 to the Windows directory (This is installation default, Windows will now prepare the directory for installation)
8) Click on PORTABLE as you have a laptop
9) Windows will now prompt you for the PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (this is found on the front cover of the Windows 95 Manual. ) Then click Next.
10) Enter your NAME and your COMPANY (if applicable).
11) Select SOUND, MIDI, OR VIDEO CAPTURE CARD.
12) Click on NEXT. (Windows will now analyse your computer, this may take 2-3 minutes, follow on screen instructions if set-up stops for a long period of time)
13) Click on the check boxes you wish to install,
A) THE MICROSOFT NETWORK
B) MICROSOFT MAIL
C) MICROSOFT FAX
Click on NEXT.
14) Click on INSTALL THE MOST COMMON COMPONENTS
15) If you want a start-up disk please insert a blank floppy now (HIGH DENSITY) (This is recommended, if windows hangs the start-up disk will allow to safe recover)
16) To start copying files click on NEXT. (Windows will now be installed, this will take around 25-35 minutes. dependent on CPU speed/CD-ROM speed)
17) Click on FINISH and remove any disks in the Laptop (Windows will now restart; this will also take several minutes)
18) Windows will now ask the REGIONAL SETTINGS. (Use the mouse or the pull down menu to select region)
19) Click on NEXT.
20) Click on OK to reset the machine.
21) Once windows is loaded cancel all of the auto detection for plug and play devices and restart the machine.


SETTING UP OF LANGUAGE IN WINDOWS 95

1) In Windows 95 go to START then to SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL
2) Select KEYBOARD by pointing to & double clicking the mouse button
3) Select LANGUAGE
4) Select ADD and move down the languages until you get to "ENGLISH (British)"
5) Select "ENGLISH (British)" and click OK
6) Now highlight "ENGLISH (United States)" and select REMOVE
7) Select OK (Windows will now load the files it requires from the CD)
8) Now select REGIONAL SETTINGS
9) Move up the selection until you get to "ENGLISH (British)"
10) Select "ENGLISH (British)"
11) Select OK
12) Select ok to restart the machine


SETTING UP OF THE DISPLAY

1) In Windows 95 go to START then to SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL
2) Select DISPLAY by pointing to & double clicking the mouse button
3) Select SETTINGS
4) Select ADVANCED PROPERTIES
5) Select CHANGE under Adapter Type
6) Select HAVE DISK and insert your driver CD and select the appropriate driver.
7) Select OK
5) Select MONITOR under Advanced display properties
6) Select CHANGE and choose LAPTOP DISPLAY ( 1024 X 768 )
7) Select APPLY then click OK
8) Select High Color ( 16 bit ) under Color Palette & 800 x 600 pixels under Desktop area.
9) Select Apply followed by Close. (windows may prompt to restart the computer - click restart.)


SETTING UP OF THE PCMCIA DRIVER TO 32BIT MODE

1) In Windows 95 go to START then to SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL
2) Select SYSTEM by pointing to & double clicking the mouse button
3) Select PERFORMANCE
4) Highlight PCMCIA SETTINGS & click on details.
5) Now follow the on screen instructions (windows will load the files it requires and switch OFF your machine)
6) Once machine is OFF switch ON to carry on with settings


WINDOWS 95 IS NOW COMPLETELY SET UP ON YOUR MACHINE
