Introduction
This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Starbook 710 notebook computer with Windows Me. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact Mobile Support Customer Services. Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation. If you have any queries regarding any part of this installation, please do not hesitate to contact the Mobile support technical support department Please have the following disks and CD's to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive. · Notebook Driver CD.
This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean. How To Use The F-disk Windows Me on your Starbook 710 F-disk is a dos based program that allows you remove any partitions from the hard drive and format the drive before installing any operating system. 1) Enter the F-Disk Program by booting from a Windows 98 boot disk.
Complete Reinstall WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk.
Follow, Fdisk Instructions Enclosed for a hard drive that contains information, and proceed from step 1 thereafter. 1. Switch the Starbook 710 On, when prompted, press Installation of Video drivers on Starbook 710 under Windows Me 1. Boot into windows, you may find it difficult to view the screen.
Installation of Sound Drivers on Starbook 710 Under Windows Me 1. Boot into windows.
The Sound drivers are now installed - to test reboot the computer and you should hear a jingle as Windows restarts Installation of the PCI card (Modem) on Starbook 710 for Windows Me 1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
Installation of the Ethernet card on Starbook 710 for Windows Me 1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
Installation of the DVD software on the Starbook 710 for Windows Me 1. Insert the Win DVD 2000 CD into the drive.
Please note when using some DVD's they have PC Friendly software to view the DVD film. Please DO NOT INSTALL this as they tend to conflict with the WinDVD Software
· Windows Me CD and windows licence number
· Windows DVD 2000 CD (only if your notebook has a DVD drive)
2) Choose boot without CDROM support and wait for the system to load.
3) Type "Fdisk" at A:\>
4) Enter the fdisk by pressing enter to [Y]
5) Display Partition Information by pressing [4] and note the partitions present.
6) Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive.
7) You need to remove non DOS Partitions by selecting [4] Select delete non-DOS Partition and
8) Press enter to continue.
9) You will be conformed with a message "Are you sure", Press [Y] for Yes and Enter
10) After removing Partition[s] press ESC to go back to the main screen.
11) Check to see if all partitions are removed by selecting [4] View Partition Information there should no Partitions defined and press Esc and reboot the machine.
2. Select Boot and then select Boot Device. Enable 1st boot CD-ROM Drive 2nd boot Diskette A and 3rd boot Hard Disk C.
3. Select Exit and then Exit saving changes. Click on YES to confirm.
4. Insert Windows Me CD and reboot the computer. Wait while Windows Me loads some files.
5. Select Boot from CD-ROM.
6. Press enter to set-up Windows Me from CD-ROM when prompted.
7. Press Enter to continue with set-up.
8. Press Enter to install using unallocated disk space, which is recommended.
9. Highlight " yes enable large disk support " and press Enter to continue.
10. Press Enter restart. Boot the computer from CD-ROM.
11. Start windows set-up from CD-ROM and press enter.
12. Please wait while set-up formats the hard drive, this may take a few minutes.
13. Set-up will perform routine checks and continue to install windows, please press enter to continue installation.
14. Click Next and Next again to prepare your drive to install in windows directory.
15. Click Next to install a typical installation (recommended), then click Next to install common components.
16. Type name of the computer and description if required. Press Next.
17. Select the correct country region and click Next again, select the correct time zone and once again click Next.
18. Select Finish to begin copying files, this may take several minutes.
19. Fill the user information by entering your name and company if applicable, then click Next to continue.
20. Read the license agreement select "I accept the agreement" and click Next.
21. Carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity, which is found on the Windows manual. Click Next.
22. Completing Windows Me set-up, Click Finish.
23. The machine will restart. On reboot, the machine will continue to finalise the settings.
24. The machine will restart again, when prompted press
25. Select Boot and change boot sequence to 1st boot Diskette A, 2nd boot Hard disk C and 3rd boot CD-ROM.
26. Select Exit and Exit saving changes and then YES to confirm.
27. The machine will boot into Windows, remove the Windows Me CD.
28. Congratulations, you have now installed Windows Me. All that is left is to install the Video, Audio, Modem and Network card drivers - instructions are included overleaf.
2. Insert the drivers CD-ROM supplied with the computer.
3. The CD will auto-run and you will see the Windows Me Set-up screen. Select VGA Driver icon (monitor) from the menu and click Next.
4. Click Next and do a typical installation.
5. Click Next and Next, wait for files to be copied.
6. Click Finish to restart the machine.
7. Right Click on the desktop and select properties.
8. Click the Settings tab from the menu above and change the screen area and colours to Size:
1024x768
Colours: High Colour (16 Bit)
9. Apply these setting by clicking on apply then OK and then YES to confirm.
2. Insert the drivers CD-ROM supplied with the computer.
3. The CD will auto-run and you will see the Windows Me Set-up screen. Select the Audio Driver icon (speaker) from the menu and click Next.
4. Click Next and Next, wait for files to be copied.
5. Click Finish and restart the machine.
2. Right click on My Computer, click properties and then click Device Manager.
3. Double click PCI Card, this device is listed under Other Devices.
4. Click the reinstall driver tab.
5. Automatic search for better drivers (recommended). Click Next.
6. Windows driver wizard gives a list of drivers, select the correct driver with the correct operating system marked Next to it. Click OK.
7. When windows has finished installing the drivers, click Finish.
8. Restart the machine and the drivers to take effect.
2. Right click on My Computer, click properties and then Device Manager.
3. Double click the PCI Ethernet Controller, this device is listed under Other Devices.
4. Click the reinstall driver tab and click Next.
5. Wait whilst it searches for best drivers and installs them. You may be required to select from a list the correct drivers.
6. Click finish and restart the machine as requested.
2. Wait for the CD to Auto-run.
3. Click the Install InterVideo WinDVD 2000 tab.
4. Click the install now tab and wait for the set-up to start.
5. Click the Next tab, agree with the licence agreement and click yes.
6. Type the name of the computer usually Starbook 710 and the serial number from the envelope of the Win DVD 2000 CD and click Next.
7. Click the Next tab, select the typical installation, click Next and wait for the files to be copied.
8. Click Finish to complete the set-up.
9. Click Finish and restart the machine.
