Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Iridium Starbook 700 notebook computer with Windows 2000. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact mobile-support.net Customer Services.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

Please have the following disks and CD�s to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

If there is an Operating System on your hard drive already installed, please follow the Fdisk Document Enclosed.


How To Use The F-disk Windows 2000 on your StarBook 700

F-disk is a dos based program that allows you remove any partitions from the hard drive and format the drive before installing any operating system.

  1. Enter the F-Disk Program by booting from a Windows 98 boot disk
  2. Choose boot without CDROM support and wait for the system to load.
  3. Type �Fdisk� at A:\>
  4. Enter the fdisk by pressing enter to [Y]
  5. Display Partition Information by pressing [4] and note the partitions present
  6. Press ESC to get back to the main menu and delete the partitions present by choosing number [3] Delete Partition or Logical DOS Drive
  7. You need to remove non DOS Partitions by selecting [4] Select delete non-DOS Partition and press enter to continue.
  8. You will be conformed with a message �Are you sure�, Press [Y] for Yes and Enter
  9. After removing Partition[s] press ESC to go back to the main screen.
  10. Check to see if all partitions are removed by selecting [4] View Partition Information there should no Partitions defined and press Esc and reboot the machine.

Complete Reinstall

WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

These instructions assume a completely blank Hard Disk.

  1. Switch The Starbook 700 On and, when prompted, press F2 to enter setup
  2. Select Boot->Boot Device Priority and change so that CDROM is first, Diskette second Hard Drive third and the Lan fourth.
  3. Insert the Win2000 CD into drive and press F10 then return to save changes
  4. Set-up will check your hardware and load some files
  5. Press enter to set-up windows 2000 when prompted
  6. Read the license agreement and, press F8 �I accept the agreement�
  7. Press Enter to install in the unpartiton ed space
  8. Format the Partition using the NFTS file system by pressing enter and set-up will start formatting.
  9. Windows Wizard will now set-up Windows 2000
  10. Press Enter to install using unpartitioned space
  11. Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press enter
  12. Please wait while set-up formats the partition
  13. Set-up will examine your drive and copy files into Windows 2000 installation folders, this may take several minutes to complete
  14. Press any key to reboot machine or it will reboot by itself after a count down
  15. Click the next tab to continue set-up. Windows will detect and install devices on your computer such as mouse and keyboard, the screen may flicker a few times which is normal.
  16. Click next after the device installation is complete. Regional settings message will appear and select customise and select English (UNITED KINGDOM) and click apply and ok for the keyboard select English (UNITED KINGDOM) and click ok and next
  17. Type in name and organisation if relevant
  18. Carefully enter the Product ID number found on your certificate of Authenticity, which is found on the Windows manual.
  19. Click next on administrator password screen if not required
  20. Change the date and time then click next
  21. Wait for network setting to install software and components and wait for final set of tasks this may take a few moments
  22. Choose whether to use typical or custom settings for networking settings �typical recommended�
  23. Place a dot in �No the computer is not on a network and click next
  24. Wait for files to be copied and final tasks are complete click next and finish after the installation is complete
  25. Windows will restart automatically
  26. Click next if you wish not to connect an network and finish
  27. Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 2000. All that is left is to install is the modem drivers, you may not require drivers for the video card and network card as windows may load standard drivers for you, instructions are included overleaf for reference.

Installation of Video drivers on Starbook 700

  1. Right click on My Computer click properties and then hardware then Click Device Manager
  2. Click the [+] next to Display Adapters and Double Click ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage LT Pro AGP 2x
  3. Click Driver tab and update driver
  4. Click next and search for better drivers which is recommended by windows
  5. Tick CDROM drive and Click Next
  6. Please wait whist Windows find new drivers and Click Next
  7. Select yes to continue the installation and wait for files to copy and Click on Finish
  8. Close all windows and restart the machine
  9. Wait for windows to reload
  10. If the window appears to be in the middle with a black surround follow the steps below:
  11. Right Click on the desktop and select properties
  12. Click the Settings tab from the menu above and change the screen area and colours to
    Size: 1024x768
    Colours: High Colour (16 Bit)
  13. Apply theses setting by clicking on apply and then OK

Installation of Sound Drivers on Starbook 700 Under Windows 2000

Windows 2000 would load standard sound drivers during the installation you may not need to install any drivers for sound.


Installation of Modem on Starbook 700 Under Windows 2000

  1. Ensure the CD supplied is inserted with modem driver for win2k
  2. Right click on My Computer select properties and then select hardware tab from the top
  3. Select Device Manager
  4. Double Click the entry labelled: PCI Simple communication controller
  5. Click the reinstall driver tab and click next
  6. Search for better drivers recommended and click next
  7. Tick CD ROM drive and click next wait for wizard to search for drivers
  8. Click next when windows finds to continue with the instalation of drivers
  9. Wait for files to be copied over and click finish
  10. Close all windows and restart the machine
  11. Your drivers are now installed

Installation of Drivers for the Internal Network Card for a Starbook 700

  1. Ensure the Drivers CD is inserted into the CDROM drive
  2. Right click on My computer and select properties
  3. Now click on Hardware and then Device Manager
  4. Double click Network Adapter and highlight AMD PCNET Family PCI Ethernet Adapter
  5. Select the driver tab from the top and click update driver
  6. Click next and then next, place a tick in CD ROM drive box and click next
  7. Wait for windows to search for suitable driver and click on the next button
  8. Wait for the wizard to copy over the files and click next when finished
  9. Close all windows and restart the machine
  10. Your drivers are now installed
