Introduction

This booklet has been designed to help the novice user to set up their Iridium Starbook 625 notebook computer with Windows 2000. Some knowledge of computers is required to follow through this booklet. If you experience any difficulties when setting up the software, contact Mobile Support Customer Services.

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

If you have any queries regarding any part of this installation, please do not hesitate to contact the Mobile support technical support department

Please have the following disks and CD�s to hand, as theses will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

Complete Reinstall
WARNING: ALL DATA ON HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

  1. Turn the notebook on and insert the Windows 2000 installation CD.
  2. After the power on self-test the Starbook 625 will display a prompt, press the F8 key to enter the boot menu.
  3. Select the CD-ROM and press return when prompted press any key to boot from the Windows 2000 CD. Wait for windows 2000 whilst set-up loads some files and prepares the drive for windows 2000 installation.
  4. Press enter to set-up windows 2000 when prompted
  5. Windows Wizard will now set-up Windows 2000
  6. Read the license agreement, and press F8 �I accept the agreement�
  7. If prompted press the Esc. Key to continue with the installation.
  8. Press [D] to delete the partition that�s active. Confirm by pressing enter on the next screen followed by [L] Key to finalise. After the partition is deleted the total disk space available will be shown in MB �Megabytes�. Press enter to install using un-partitioned space
  9. Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press enter
  10. Please wait while the set-up formats the partition, this may take a while depending on the hard drive size.
  11. Set-up will examine your drive and copy files, this may take several minutes to complete, during this process the screen may flicker a few times. This is normal.
  12. Enter the regional settings and then click next to proceed.
  13. Type in your personal details (name and organisation) and then click next to continue.
  14. Carefully enter the Product ID number found on your Certificate of Authenticity ( COA ) and then click Next. The COA is usually found on the cellophane wrapped around the Windows pack or it will be stuck to the base of your notebook (The COA will be in the following format : XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX - XXXXX)
  15. Enter an Administrator password and click on Next. (This may be left blank, however for security it is best that you set an administrator password and keep it in a safe place)
  16. Set the date time and time zone, once finished click next to continue.
  17. Click finish to complete the installation.
  18. The notebook will restart automatically. Remember not to boot from CD-Drive .
  19. Click Next. Now enter the user details for the person who will be using the notebook and click on Next. When prompted again click on Finish.
  20. Congratulations, you have now installed Windows 2000. All that is left is to install is the video drivers and modem, network card drivers - instructions are included overleaf

Installation of Video drivers on Starbook 625 under Windows 2000

  1. Boot into windows, and insert the driver cd supplied with the notebook.
  2. Double click on my computer and double click the CDROM drive
  3. Select the Drivers \ VGA \ Win2k&XP; folder and then Double click the setup.exe icon
  4. Click next and do a Custom installation. Then click on Next and then select next again.
  5. Once the notebook has restarted Right Click on the desktop and select properties, Click the Settings tab from the menu above and change the screen area and colours to Size: 1024x768 and set the Colours: High Colour (16 Bit) and then click on OK to confirm the settings. And then click yes to keep the settings. Now click on the OK button to finalise the installation.

Installation of Sound Drivers on Starbook 625 Under Windows 2000

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer. And double click CD-ROM Drive form my computer
  2. Select the driver \ Audio folder and double click on the SETUP.exe icon.
  3. Click on Next and the Next again. ( setup will copy the required files to the hard disk )
  4. Click on Finish to restart the notebook. The Sound drivers are now installed - You should hear a jingle as Windows restarts - providing the volume control (located at the front of the notebook) is turned up.

Installation of the PCI card (modem) on Starbook 625 for Windows 2000

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
  2. Right click on My Computer click properties and then hardware then Click Device Manager
  3. Right Click on the PCI Card, and left click on properties (this device should be listed under Other Devices)
  4. Click the reinstall driver button and click next, click next 3 times again. ( setup will copy across the files that are required for the installation.
  5. Now click on Finish and then close. Now restart the machine for the drivers to take effect.

Installation of LAN Drivers on Starbook 625 Under Windows 2000

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer. And double click CD-ROM Drive form my computer
  2. Select the driver \ LAN folder and double click on the SETUP.exe icon.
  3. Click on Next. (setup will copy the required files to the hard disk )
  4. Click on Finish to restart the notebook.

Installation of the Mini PCI Wireless LAN Drivers on Starbook 625 Under Windows 2000

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer. And double click CD-ROM Drive form my computer
  2. Select the driver \ Minipci - Wireless LAN folder and double click on the setup icon.
  3. Click on Next., now click on next again. Now click on Yes. Setup will copy the required files to the hard disk.
