Introduction

Please ensure all extra devices (PC cards, Modems, Network cards, external mice etc.) are removed before starting this installation.

If you have any queries regarding any part of this installation, please do not hesitate to contact the Mobile support technical support department

Please have the following disks and CD�s to hand, as these will be required during the process of installing Windows to your hard drive.

This Installation process may take up to 2 hours to install depending on the speed of your machine. Please backup any files required, as the hard drive is going to be completely wiped clean.

WARNING: ALL DATA ON THE HARD DISK DRIVE WILL BE DELETED

  1. Turn the notebook on and insert the Windows XP installation CD.
  2. After the power on self-test the Starbook 520 will display a prompt, press the F8 key to enter the boot menu.
  3. Select the CD-ROM and press return when prompted press any key to boot from the Windows XP CD. Wait for Windows XP whilst set-up loads some files and prepare the drive for Windows XP installation.
  4. Press enter to set-up Windows XP when prompted
  5. Windows Wizard will now set-up Windows XP
  6. Read the license agreement, and press F8 �I accept the agreement�
  7. If prompted press the Esc. Key to continue with the installation.
  8. Press [D] to delete the partition that�s active. Confirm by pressing enter on the next screen followed by [L] Key to finalise. After the partition is deleted the total disk space available will be shown in MB �Megabytes�. Press enter to install using un-partitioned space
  9. Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press enter
  10. Please wait while the set-up formats the partition, this may take a while depending on the hard drive size. After a short while the notebook will restart, let the notebook boot from the hard disk and continue with the installation process.
  11. Set-up will examine your drive and copy files, this may take several minutes to complete, during this process the screen may flicker a few times this is normal.
  12. Enter the regional settings and then click next to proceed.
  13. Type in your personal details (name and organisation) and then click next to continue.
  14. Carefully enter the Product ID number found on your Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and then click Next. The COA is usually found on the cellophane wrapped around the Windows pack or it will be stuck to the base of your notebook (The COA will be in the following format: XXXXX � XXXXX � XXXXX � XXXXX � XXXXX)
  15. Enter an Administrator password and click on Next. (This may be left blank, however for security it is best that you set an administrator password and keep it in a safe place)
  16. Set the date time and time zone, once finished click next to continue.
  17. Click next to proceed with the Typical network settings, and when prompted click next again.
  18. Click OK twice to adjust the display settings.
  19. Click Next to start the customisation of the installation.
  20. Click on Skip, and then click on No remind me every few days. And then click on Next.
  21. Enter a User name and click on Next.
  22. Now click on Finish.
  23. The notebook will now boot into Windows XP.

Congratulations, you have now installed Windows XP. All that is left is to install is the video drivers and modem, network card drivers � instructions are included below.

Installation of Video drivers on Starbook 520 under Windows XP

  1. Boot into windows, and insert the driver cd supplied with the notebook.
  2. Double click on my computer and double click the CDROM drive
  3. Select the Video \ Win2k&XP; folder and then Double click the setup.exe icon
  4. Click next and do a Custom installation. Then click on Next and then select next again.
  5. Once the notebook has restarted Right Click on the desktop and select properties, Click the Settings tab from the menu above and change the screen area and colours to Size: 1024x768 and set the Colours: High Colour (16 Bit) and then click on OK to confirm the settings. And then click yes to keep the settings. Now click on the OK button to finalise the installation.

Installation of Sound Drivers on Starbook 520 Under Windows XP

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer. And double click CD-ROM Drive from my computer
  2. Select the Audio folder and double click on the SETUP.exe icon.
  3. Click on Next and then yes. ( setup will copy the required files to the hard disk )
  4. Click on Finish to restart the notebook. The Sound drivers are now installed � You should hear a jingle as Windows restarts � providing the volume control (located at the front of the notebook) is turned up.

Installation of the PCI card (modem) on Starbook 520 for Windows XP

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer.
  2. Select the \ Modem\ Win2000 folder and double click on the SETUP.exe icon.
The modem drivers are now installed

Installation of LAN Drivers on Starbook 520 Under Windows XP

  1. Insert the drivers CD supplied with the computer. And double click CD-ROM Drive from my computer
  2. Select the driver LAN folder and double click on the SETUP.exe icon.
  3. Click on Next. (Set-up will copy the required files to the hard disk)
Click on Finish to restart the notebook. If your notebook is equiped with a DVD drive, insert the Win DVD software. And follow the wizard to install the software for dvd playback.
